HOW IT STARTED
From the beginning:

I was a newspaper reporter for many years, but I had a secret wish: to grow plants for a living. Eventually, I met the right guy (he already had a sweet little farm), we got married, and when our first child was born we both decided to quit our careers and start a market farm. We quickly learned that we didn’t know enough to succeed as farmers, and as we looked for information, we realized there was no national magazine for small-scale, organic market farms. So I started one. Growing for Market published its first issue in January 1992 and it’s still going strong, though it’s now in the capable hands of another market farmer.
As Dan and I continued to grow and sell vegetables, we eventually added cut flowers to our crop mix. Not only did we diversify and increase our income, I have lived and breathed flowers ever since. My first book, The Flower Farmer (more below), has become a sort of cult classic among aspiring flower farmers and is still selling well almost 30 years later. Even though I’ve retired from flower farming, I keep up with the world of flowers. I’ve bred my first zinnia variety and have more in the pipeline. I started this website to share my passion for flowers, and I will use it to blog about my experiences with all things floral.
